Calorie Dollars is a way of thinking about counting calories that my husband, Shawn, came up with. It’s a way of making calorie counting less abstract and more real. For instance, in Shawn’s case, he has $2,000 (as in 2,000 calories) to spend each day. This helps him to think about where he’s “spending” his calories and if the price is really worth the expenditure.
So, who are we? We’re like anyone else. I am a writer and editor. Shawn is in retail management. We are a married couple with children who live in Connecticut and are among America’s overweight.
I’ve been overweight since the birth of my first child (although I lost a good deal of weight after his birth) and my husband has been overweight since the 1990s. For me, losing weight is a necessity — I am just not happy with flab and fat hanging on for the ride. For my husband, losing weight is necessary so that he can be around to walk our daughter down the aisle . . . 2008 is our year to beat the flab and get back the bodies we used to have.
